Enrique De Roeck

It was a viewing of the film White Nights, starring Baryshnikov, which his mother showed him, that was “the catalyst” for Enrique’s love of ballet. As for the theatre, he “was mesmerised by a trilogy of monologues written and directed by Belgians Jan Fabre for Dirk Roofthooft—performed in a tiny theatre called Troubleyn” as a teenager in Antwerp. More recently, he was “swept away by Sarah Snook in The Picture of Dorian Grey.”

“I’m very bullish on the Cherry Lane Theatre,” he shares: “They barely opened, but the team behind A24 have somewhat reimagined live performances in a tiny space. Fun fact- it’s the oldest off-Broadway theatre, and it’s hidden in one of my favourite nooks of the city. It’s intimate, has a great bar, and the performance curation so far has been very original. I almost want to keep it a secret.”

He adds: “If not that, I’m Lincoln Center all the way.” Also, “you can get $30 tickets for the NYC ballet if you’re under 30 years old.” For his post-ballet bite: “A Cadillac burger at PJ Clarkes is a must.” And: “Sometimes you’ll find me at the Brooklyn Diner on 57th.”

When asked if he dresses up for the theatre, the answer is a resolute: “Absolutely.”
